Evening Talk | Prof. Dr. Lewis Doney

This series of three lectures will provide a lively introduction to the cultural history of Tibet in the pre-modern period. The first lecture will contextualise Tibet within Asia, focusing on the Tibetan imperial period (c. 600–841) and the introduction into the country of a multilayered Buddhism that grew in popularity even after the fall of the empire. The second lecture will describe the importance of tantric Buddhism for post-imperial Tibetans, the beginnings of the schools of Tibetan Buddhism and the changes that took place with the rise of the Mongol empire in the thirteenth century. The third lecture will investigate the relationship between power and cultural productivity in the post-Mongol times and under the government of the Dalai Lamas (1642–1959). Registration deadline is two days before.
