Tibet House: About us

The Tibet House

Tibet House Delhi in India was founded at the end of the sixties at the initiative of the Dalai Lama. The continuing exodus of many Tibetans since the Dalai Lama’s escape in 1959 made it necessary to create an institution where the Tibetan tradition could be saved and an exchange between cultures be organized. Today House Delhi is an important hub within the international network of Tibetans.

Gradually more Tibet Houses have been founded in other countries. The Tibet House New York needs to be mentioned in the founding of which the actor Richard Gere played an influential role.

In 2004 Dagyab Kyabgön Rinpoche, a high-ranking teacher in the Tibetan Buddhist tradition who has lived in Germany for more than 40 years, suggested founding a Tibet House in Germany, as well. The Buddhist association Chödzong e. V. which has been co-operating with Rinpoche on a spiritual level since the eighties adopted the idea and made the Tibet House Germany their project: systematically, events and activities also include non-religious areas like Art + Culture, Personality + Society, Tibetian Medicine + Healing Aarts and Science, Research + Scholarship.

In the fall of 2005 Chödzong e.V. moved to new premises at Frankfurt and, since the spring of 2006, has been offering a varied program for Buddhists and non-Buddhists interested in Tibet.
